ABSTRACT
Neurological Intensive Care (NIC) or Neurocritical care (NCC) is a new specialty in Korea and also in the United States. Its subspecialty gained formal recognition and acceptance by the United Council of Neurologic Subspecialties on October 26, 2005 in the United States. NIC is composed of multidisciplinary professional healthcare providers that are dedicated to improve the care and outcomes of patients with life-threatening neurological illness by promoting quality patient care, professional collaboration, research, training and advocacy. Neurointensivist assumes full responsibility for both the medical and neurological care. In Neurological intensive care unit, patients are monitored to detect and intervene upon life-threatening events, to aid in diagnosis, and to assess efficacy of treatment. In Korea, the organization of NIC should be designed to minimize secondary neurological injury and medical complications and to facilitate the patient's transition to a recovery environment.
