ABSTRACT
Status epilepticus (SE) is an underrecognized emergency that requires rapid and aggressive management to prevent neuronal damage and systemic complications. The rate of death still remains approximately 20% and the risk of cognitive decline and development of epilepsy are increased. The termination of seizures should be begun early, and investigation of causes should be tried properly. The vascular, infectious and immunological causes may have treatment modalities, and the treatable cause should be ruled out carefully as etiology of SE. SE can be refractory to the treatments. The formed description and classification of SE are necessary for discussing the patients with refractory SE.
