ABSTRACT
Status epilepticus is a neurologic emergency. Early recognition and intervention reduces morbidity and mortality, although treatment of the underlying etiology is also crucial. This review outlines concepts related to definition, classification, and etiology of status epilepticus. Particular attention is given to pitfalls in the diagnosis and management of status epilepticus. In refractory status epilepticus, continuous electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring is required to recognize recurrence of seizure activity, as most seizure will be nonconvulsive.
